About This Project

LIFE SUCKS

is a dark, absurdist, but surprisingly accurate portrayal of middle school and all of the tragic comedy that makes up everyday life at that age.

Let us take you back to a simpler time....crushes, kickball, science dioramas, hair in new places. Watch as Ally, Jake, and Max face the formative events of their lives that will ultimately evolve into their crippling adult insecurities.

These three thirteen-year-olds have one thing in common: they have no friends. Each of their respective cliques have ditched them, leaving the three of them to fend for themselves. In the jungle of middle school where social status is everything, Ally, Jake, and Max have no other option than to turn to each other for help.

Ally has been told by her "friends" (the teachers) that she needs to make friends her own age; because exclusively having adult friends is developmentally detrimental. Jake is left baffled when the rest of the cool kids abandon him for their new girlfriends, and Max is exiled from the drama club when it turns out he’s horrible at acting, which is no surprise to he himself.

Will these three social outcasts be able to get back in with their old friend? How long will they survive Middle School with only each other at their sides? Will they ever be cool? We have six hilariously action-packed episodes planned, tackling awkward middle-school dances, dangerous field trips, and manstration – what is that? Help us make the show, and we'll tell you all about it.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The student body in the show will be comprised of a mixture of 20-somethings and actual middle schoolers (ages 12-15). In fact, what is unique about Life Sucks is that part of our fundraising effort focuses on creating a theatre workshop intensive for kids who will also get to act in the show.

TEEN ACTING WORKSHOP

To entice the forty-five middle school extras we need to make our wacky middle school a reality, we are hosting a month long camp program that will coincide with the active television production. While the kids are not on set, they will be learning and working on skills that will inform their work on screen. It's going to be a creative explosion of awesome!!! To apply just click the "Theatre Workshop/Featured Extra" reward, and when we reach our goal we will send you the sign up form. (*parents must sign their kids up, we can't accept donations from minors).

The program will be lead by Proximity Theatre Company's Kyra Lehman and Ken Urbina, professional theatre directors with over 10 years of experience producing plays and teaching workshops to young actors. In our workshop, kids will get to create the characters that they will play in Life Sucks and they will be introduced to acting techniques such as character development, improvisation, voice and movement exercises and get to create "spin-off" webisodes based on each actor's character.

The workshop will take place at our middle school location in Brooklyn (Boerum Hill) from July 22nd-August 22nd. 6 days a week (Mon-Sat) 8am-6pm. For any questions about the program, please e-mail us.

SHADOW PROGRAM

We are also offering the opportunity for 8 teens to shadow the director, an actor, actress or producer for 2 full weeks on the set of Life Sucks. For aspiring actors or filmmakers, we will teach you everything we know, and give you one-on-one acting training, let you direct a scene in Life Sucks, or other cool opportunities based on your interests and aspirations (a particularly great resume booster for college applications). To sign up, just click the "Shadow Program" reward. (*parents must sign their kids up, we can't accept donations from minors). For any questions about the program, please e-mail us.
